Fractal Location and Anomalous Diffusion Dynamics for Oil Wells from the KY Geological Survey

    Get PDF
Utilizing data available from the Kentucky Geonet (KYGeonet.ky.gov) the fossil fuel mining locations created by the Kentucky Geological Survey geo-locating oil and gas wells are mapped using ESRI ArcGIS in Kentucky single plain 1602 ft projection. This data was then exported into a spreadsheet showing latitude and longitude for each point to be used for modeling at different scales to determine the fractal dimension of the set. Following the porosity and diffusivity studies of Tarafdar and Roy1 we extract fractal dimensions of the fossil fuel mining locations and search for evidence of scaling laws for the set of deposits. The Levy index is used to determine a match to a statistical mechanically motivated generalized probability function for the wells. This probability distribution corresponds to a solution of a dynamical anomalous diffusion equation of fractional order that describes the Levy paths which can be solved in the diffusion limit by the Fox H function ansatz.Comment: : 8 pages, 3 figures, AIPG Conference Meeting, Grand Junction CO, Oct. 200

Following the exhibition of Hybrid Bodies at KKW in 2016 Andrew Carnie and I were invited back to act as mentors to a group of young artists and scientists from all over Europe undertaking a week long workshop designed to lead to new art/science collaborations. We were also invited to present the Hybrid Bodies project at a one day public event preceding the workshop

Automatically detecting neighbourhood constraint interactions using comet

The major benet of using events as the basis for our detection system is the clean separation between the neighbourhoods and detector which we can achieve. The detector simply iterates over a set of Neighbourhood objects and checks each for interactions. The acceptance function for the neighbourhood is set to accept any tness. For purposes of detecting an interaction it does not matter whether a move reduces or increases the constraint violations; both indicate that a relationship exists. The simulation is performed in two stages. Starting from a randomly created initial solution a random move from the neighbourhood is chosen, often this will lead to a constraint change and prevent the need for further exploration. For some constraints the chance of randomly selecting a move which would violate it is fairly low and so a more rigourous search is required. If the initial move has not found any interaction then the detector explores every neighbouring state from the current position. If at any stage a change of the constraint violations is detected then the exploration is stopped

Communicative Practices in an American Gamelan Orchestra

A number of biological approaches to the management of inflammtory arthropathies have been explored. These include the development of IL-1 receptor antagonists and TNF antagonists. Four biological agents are currently marketed in Europe. Most studies have revolved around Rheumatoid Arthritis, but an increasing number of studies are now completed or ongoing in the other inflammatory joint diseases. These studies are reviewed in this article with a view to guiding practice and usage in the Maltese Islands.peer-reviewe

Stargazing: Observatories at Gettysburg College, 1874-Present

Astronomy has long been a subject which has attracted the interest of man. Examples of early astronomers can be found in many ancient civilizations, including but not limited to, the Egyptians, the Chinese and the Greeks. As time passed the methods for interpreting the stars and theories that surrounded them changed concordant with the technology available. One of the largest breakthroughs in the world of astronomy was the invention of the telescope in the early seventeenth century. Often mis-attributed to Galileo (who was responsible for building the first reflecting telescope in 1688), the telescope was actually first designed by a Dutch spectacle-maker by the name of Johann Lippershey. Improvements were eventually made upon these designs leading to the creation of government funded observatories, such as the Royal Greenwich Observatory in England, and later private and collegiate research observatories. By the early to mid-nineteenth century, the astronomical craze had begun to develop in America, resulting in the creation of many new observatories in the North and West (now the Mid-West).
